in a parking lot, another car was clearly trying to park next to me and their side view mirror dug into the driver side of my car while they moved forward and left a 3 foot long strip (1 inch high) of what looks to be paint or residue from the mirror. there is also a dent but i'm trying to get the scratch/residue out and see how it looks. any suggestions? thx

a good "claner wax" or a mild compound polish found at all auto parts stores

It is going to depend on how deep the scratch is. Call a local parts house like oreillys or autozone and ask them or better yet, take it to the store and have them look at it and make a recommendation. If it is very deep, it may require repainting.
