The inventor of the game, Dr. James Naismith, started KU's program. KU hasn't missed the tourney since the early eighties, not counting the suspension year. KU has won more confrence titles, 51, than any other team in the nation. UCLA has won more national titles, 11, than any other team. Kentucky has the most wins of any team. Duke, North Carolina, and Indiana have also had impressive histories with multiple titles.

That depends are your geographical location. Clearly the most impressive legacies come from schools like, UCLA, Indiana, Kentucky, Duke, North Carolina. If any program as future visions of joining this elite group they would have to sustain years of success which would include multi national championships.

The women's program is about the same. Tennessee, Connecticut, Maryland and Texas have been women's basketball for a long time. Pat Summit has won 7 national championships with Tennessee.

All these programs have earned great respect and lasting legacies in college basketball.

I think youre right. Duke, North Carolina, UCLA, and Kentucky are the most legendary and well known teams in College Basketball. When you look in the rankings, more likely than not those teams are usually in the top 5. Theyre just like college Footballs Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame, and USC. Those are the teams that are always in the top 5 and always are known for thier strong programs, and have each won more than 7 National Titles.

I would have to say North Carolina or Duke has the best legacy, because theyre the teams that, Basketball fans or not, everyone knows them. Youve got to go with UNC, because Michael Jordan came out of UNC, but Duke is just about equal with UNC. With leaders like Dean Smith and Coach K, who are some of the most well known coaches around. Id say you could also count Bobby Knight as a legend, he has the most wins ever.

Kentucky has the winningest record in college basketball and then in the group of great leagacies would have to be UCLA, Duke, North Carolina, Kansas and probably Indiana. Those that I have mentioned are definately the elite basketball schools. I would say the best legacy would have to go to the school with the winningest program and that would be as I aforementioned, Kentucky.

I'd say UCLA because of their unparalled dominance in the late 60's and early 70's, what was it, nine championships during that span?
Plus they've been back to the Finals in '80, '95 (won), and '06.
Plus, there's no more prestigious coach in terms of winning championships than John Wooden.

UCLA, especially after that really long win streak, the championships, the players, and "the coach" John Wooden.
