Why worry if it's something bad either it's not true, or they are giving someone else a rest, If it's good well that is flattering, as long as I don't make to much of it.
The human has a tongue which cannot find much rest, I just would wish some people would think before they speak.
Forgiveness is also a gift better than speech, if we leaned that in stead of anger, life would be so easy, then people would feel that gossip is so stupid whether true or false

It happens all the time. Sometimes it's good and most times it's bad.
The important thing to remember is that the things that people say about you often say more about them than about you. Consider the intent and reason for their remarks you might find a valuable weapon.

When I was younger I would have either told them off or maybe caused a scene, but now that I am more mature I write it off as their lack of maturity and that they must be very bored or insecure to spend their time talking about me...
Shucks..I know I am interesting...crap,good and all..lol

I would either think that they don't know me very well, or that they're @ssholes and not deserving of my company, anyway. Then there's the whole leaving the burning paper bag of dog sh!t on their doorstep and ringing the doorbell response...

I'd swear out loud until I got everyone's attention and just say "well, it looks like you all have me figured out. How about we all move on?" Then I'd continue to do whatever it was I was interrupted from.

I would confront them, especially if they are supposed to be friends - once I had my say I would just ignore them, if they are talking about me at least they are giving some other poor sole a rest.....
