Some other questions to ask yourself when looking to purchase a laptop:
What are you going to be using it for? Desktop replacement, gaming, or mobility? Will it be used extensively or infrequently? What is your budget? Small budget to money is no object?
If you are going to be using it for gaming, then there are only a few vendors that make a good gaming laptop. You mention you want Centrino; Centrino is not a processor, it is a marketing slogan and a technology. All Centrino means is that your laptop contains an intel processor with an intel systemboard and intel network card and intel wireless network card. There are network cards (both wired and wireless) out there that are better then what intel makes, Braodcom to name one. Intel is just trying get you to put more money in their pocket. As long as it says Pentium M (for mobile) you will have a "centrino" processor. The processor you want should be the core 2 duo and you should outfit the laptop with the most memory you can afford (1GB minimum 2 GB would be best if you are going to run Vista). If you want a quality laptop that is going to just run with good reliability and performance, there are two that stand out among all the others. Apple and IBM/Lenovo. These two have been at the top of the rankins for years and continue their dominance (although I think the mac hardware is prone to higher failure rates then their Windows brethren).
Ms Dell must be Michael Dell's wife. Ignore everything she has saida bout Dell making quality notebooks, quality is not in the Dell vocabulary. Where I work I support over 300 Dell laptops (soon to be replaced by Lenovo Thinkpads) and they have a very high failure rate, specifically on system boards, LCD screens and hard drives. If your system is out of warranty (like some of ours are now) forget about getting parts,as Dell will tell you they have none for out of warranty systems. My Dell rep also told me that they expect an 85% failure rate in year three on all of their systems (desktops and notebooks). Is it any wonder Michael Dell came out of retirement to run the company again?

last year, i worked for geek squad in a best buy store. Best buy has the best prices you will find for laptops and tvs, besides buying second hand used or referbished equipment.
They actually sell those two items at cost (what best buy pays for bulk) and then only make money on the extra stuff they sell, like bags, cables, routers, cards ect...
Search the sunday news paper for the best buy weekly special thingy, that'll have all their best stuff on sale in it.
Get an AMD duel core, or an INTEL core 2 duo. They'll be a lil bit more expensive, but fast fast FAST!
I told everyone there looking for a new laptop what my views were. The toshiba laptops are the fastest, but the hp laptops are more durrable. Those are the 2 best ones.

go to http://cnet.com read the reviews, they will help you get a good start. personally, i'd wait until after summer to buy a new computer. AMD and Intel are suppose to release mainstream quad core CPUs so prices will fall on their older stuff (today's stuff). HP, gateway, and Dell are good choices from my experiences, and you can get lots of options. If you want to get it soon, waiting a month won't matter that much.
ps. I have had several problems with dell's customer service people, so i cant put them at the top of my list, still a good computer though. Just expect them not to know anything and put you on hold for hours(if you're lucky).

The best Notebook company right now is Dell. Why? Let me elaborate.
1) Good customer service.
2) Durable products.
3) up to 18 months without payment and interest.
4) Dell support hardware live chat.
5) Dell computers are luxury computers.
6) Dell builds the computer the way YOU want it.
Choose Dell.
P.S. Note that " villanim" is trying to compete with me. Did you suspect the lies he told? He said a Dell rep told him that 85% of their products will fail... NO REP WILL EVER TELL YOU THAT!!!
Dell is made of high quality parts. My first desktop computer is now 8 years old, and I haven't repaired a parts on it, and it runs like brand new... My other Dell desktop is now 5 years old, and I haven't repaired a parts on it, and it runs like brand new. My old laptop is 3 years old, and I have never repaired it, and it runs like brand new, and my 5 day old XPS 1210 is what I am using right now and I LOVE it. All my computers are Dells. So how come these machines of mine are cheap quality machines and last so long?
I wanted to switch to the Macbook Pro. I played with the Apple notebooks at the apple store, and I love them, but I want to have a feel on the Dell XPS 1210 first before I buy the Macbook Pro. So I ordered the Dell XPS 1210 to have a feel, and if I didn't like it, I would return it and go for the Macbook Pro... When I put my hands on the Dell XPS 1210, I said, " Hell no. I can't believe this notebook is so gorgeous and comfortable." The keyboard feels 90% better than the Macbook Pro.
Yes, I sampled HP, Compaq, Toshiba, etc, and I never liked any of them, because they felt cheap. I happily purchased the Dell XPS 1210... You do not have to agree with me. I am a computer enthusiasm, and I know what to buy when it comes on to worthy notebooks.

if you don't mind the Mac OS, get a MacBook Pro! they are lightning fast, and have an intel Processor. you can also boot windows XP on them, not just emulate.
If you are one of the people who hate it, even though they have never used a Mac, try one out, you get a monster hard drive, 2 Gig of RAM, and it flys! you can boot Windows from it and use it as a windows, it looks sweet too!
