Three years is the normal lifespan of a laptop (and for most computers too). The resale value of a three-year-old laptop is practically nothing. This is because in most cases the technology will be quite obsolete and you will no longer be able to run the latest versions of certain programs (games especially). Also, the battery won't be as reliable as before and the warranty might no longer be in effect.
Personally, as long as you can do whatever you want to do on your laptop, go ahead and keep using it until it dies on you. Just be sure to backup your important data often. I have a very old Pentium II laptop which still runs and I use it to run old Windows 98 software. It's really up to you.

I work on laptops all the time and have for probably 12 years and there is not a specific time frame ive seen system boards go bad after a year (of course right after the warranty) and ive seen them last 5 or 6 years without any problems. My best advice to anyone is to always buy the extended warranty when purchasing a laptop and maybe do some research on any heat issues. Ive seen alot of issues in the past with toshibas over heating thus frying the processors or system boards but to answer your question i would say 3 or 4 years with the extended warranty would be a good purchase.

Usually it can last you depending on how well you care for it I just sent mine in(DELL) for repairs after having it for about 4 years now and it worked great from day one just needed repairs since I had a warranty on it for so long.

depends on how well yoou take care of it. i have a late 1990s laptop and it still works fine. from back when the hard drives were 5.59 gigs. yeah. it also depends on what kind of laptop.

Three years is the life expectancy of any computer. If you do get more, you are either lucky or real good at keeping it in proper working order.

It depends on how much you use it on battery power, and what you do on it. If you listen to music, and play videos, it uses up more battery power sooner.
