Absolutely! Research Robin Williams' childhood -- he became the 'funny guy' just to survive!

When nervous people tend to smile or laugh. It is a defense mechanism. Have you ever been in school and someone gets in trouble and the start laughing or smiling. The teacher tells them to stop but they can't. The teacher inevitably gets made but that person is truly not in control of that because it is a naturally occurring reaction within them. As for humor, people do use it to find comfort. Remember the late comedienne Chris Farley of Saturday Night Live fame, well why do you think he always did skits making fun of his fat or fat guy appearance? Because that was how he coped. If he made fun of his weight first others couldn't . If they are laughing with you they aren't laughing at you. You were exactly right about the comedy. It puts us at ease about our insecurities.

could be your defense mechanism, but i dont think that is necessarily true for all.. you could also look at it as your way of socializing with others

everyone has some insecurities, and everyone has strengths that they like to flex.. yours may be that youre funny, so quit being so hard on yourself bro and at least feel secure with what youre good at

I believe that sometimes it is...in my younger days I was always making jokes to cover my hurt....as I have gotten older and more secure its merely to make my friends and family laugh.

Yes, I agree that people who sometimes portray themselves as "funny" are in fact very insecure deep down! :(

it depends, say you were watching a film, and something really sad happened and you laughed, that is a defence mechanism because you dont want to show your emotion.
