Depends on the type of stem cell research you're talking about. In embryonic stem cell research, they do have to destroy the embryo. They can also get stem cells from other places though, like the umbilical cord after a woman gives birth.

no, the baby has already formed and the stem cells are found, usually, in things like the umbilical chord.

they are used to copy other cells, but not to clone another baby...that's a whole other science project!
