Some people fish for catfish with what's known as a jug line. They string together plastic jugs (big bobbers), and bait a line off the bottom of each of the jugs. They string them across a favorite fishing spot so that way they can fish many places at once. They leave them for some time and return later to see what they have caught. The catfish usually can't keep the jug down for long, if at all, so all you have to do is pull up your exhaused catfish from under the jug that's moving.

Around here jug fishing is when you take an empty milk jug or some other kind of bottle, tie the line to it and a hook on the end. Then you bait the hook and through the hole thing in the water. The jug will float the hook and bait. Then you just leave it for a while and then come back and pick the jug up out of the water and hopefully pull in the fish you've caught. (mostly catfish I think)

All answers here are essentially correct depending on your spelling. It can be a type of lure (usually with multiple hooks) or a technique of fishing with a lure (if spelling is "jig"). If spelling is "jug", it can mean a heavy duty "bobber" that will tire any fish trying to submerge by their buoyancy (milk jug and bleach jug are commonly used for the amount of air they hold).

When we go out salt water fishing, "jigging" is when we bounce the rig (weight and hook with bait) on the bottom to move the bait around and stir up the bottom a little (makes it look like the bait is alive).

I think you mean "jig" not jug...it's a lure that is generally attached below a bobber..we use them usually to catch stealhead.
