Who decides how the contestants on AI will dress and fix their hair? Please read details for full question?

Question

The contestants themselves or a stylist? If a stylist are they purposely trying to be extra cruel to Sanjaya? If the contestants themselves, what was that boy thinking? Yeah it causes people to talk about him, but doesn't he realize people are making fun of him? i dislike his voice, his look & his whole attitude - that is just my opinion. It seems to be a lot of others opinion as well. Now i find myself starting to feel sorry for the poor kid. He keeps getting voted back & if that keeps happening he's going to actually think that these looks he chooses (if he chooses them) & his voice are really working & he's going to expect those things to help him in the real world. In the real world, he won't have some cruel website supporting him & will fill flat on his face. Very sad. OK that's my rant - but really i want to know - who decides what style the contestants will come out in each week? And why would anyone have Sanjaya (be it the stylist or him) looking like a cartoon character?

Today (3/28) there is a video clip on Y! with Constantine, a former contestant, and today the lady asked him that question. He said that the stylist is there to give suggestions, but they leave the final choices up to the contestants so that they can stay true to themselves.

But lets face it most of these people with the exception aod Haley do not look like they belong on the stage. Blake looked okay last night but not like a star. Phil looks stupid in the hat and jacket over his hoodie.Melinda looked like she should have stayed home and baked cookies. The girls all looked fat except Haley. The guys all looked poor and unkept. And yes, Sanjaya went crazy with the hair, but think about it. You are still talking about him. There is some method to his madness and i think he is having fun. the answer is the contestants do unless what they where creates a legal problem like a band shirt or a product shirt that conflicts with the shows advertising or if say Haley were to come out topless, (Just throwing that out there, no pressure for her to go topless though it would definitely sell tickets and increase voting), they might have to try and stop her from embarrassing the other contestants that would look awful if they were to wear less clothing than the parkas they currently put on.

I believe they are given an "allowance" to shop for a wardrobe...but there is a stylist that helps them. As for Sanjaya...I feel sorry for him...he's young and I think they keep setting him up for more ridicule by doing his hair the way they do----the more people talk about the show, the better it is for them.

I remember last season someone mentioning a man's hair style, and he said "That's the way they did it." So, I don't believe the contestants choose. It is done by the assigned make up artists.
