So i started getting my masters about 2 years ago and I've already got 9 credits, and I need 36 to obtain a Masters...but what im studying im just not interested in, its an education program and i just want to study the language of Spanish itself and not the education part of it to become a teacher....my professors have told me this is probably what i shouldnt do, take another route, because trying to obtain a masters in education is not my thing. I feel so sad and disheartened for dropping out, i havent told my mom, but im afraid she will flip or be disappointed, my friends and father are cool with it, but i just feel so lost and hopeless ive started something and didnt finish. Am i doing the right thing? Im taking a class right now and bombed my mid term and have a slim chance of receiving a B to stay in the program. Is it possible to acheive a masters online solely on the language of spanish and where? I think I made a wise choice by removing myself but I dont know....any advice?

Wow...I'm not sure what advice to give you. I know the university of south florida offers spanish as a major. the really weird thing is I want to get a masters soley on the language of spanish. My plan is to go to USF and do that. I haven't really researched it that much. Go to www.usf.edu and see what they have. Maybe you can just transfer. However, I would tell your mom you just want a break and that you are going to research it further so that way you are happy. I wouldn't stay in a program that you aren't going to be happy with, otherwise it's just a waste of time. Please let me know how this turns out for you.

You can get a degree in spanish, but they usually take another slant.

In the UK, the most common slants are translation, literature and linguistics (studying the grammar and origins). There are also cultural studies (which might be a latin american or european studies program).

It seems to be going pretty slow for you. Perhaps you'd do better with a faster program.

You could try to continue the course, and end up doing a phd on just the language part of things.

But I think the big problem here is you mention what other people think. You need to do this for you, not for anyone else. Who gives a monkey what your parents and friends think. Finish it for you, or do something else for you.

But I wouldn't just drop out yet, until you've found something else. You don't have to apply to jobs as a teacher, Spanish can be used for many other careers (I won't repeat them again).

Apply to jobs while on the program, including jobs that could start before the program ends. I think the taking a break may be a mistake if you're not doing anything in that break.

I went through the drag of getting the Master's eventhough I honestly knew i would never (shouldn't say that... i know) get into the profession I graduated for. But it's done now (well - it's done long time ago). Can't say that I ever used the learnings - but still... Where I come from the difference between a guy with a Master's vs. someone who doesn't have one is about 2000 euros / month. That is somewhere around 2500 USD / month. So getting back to the question: Should u graduate or drop out? - you do the math.

Since you have 9 out of the 36 (1/4), suggest that you switch to receiving an M.A. in Spanish and travel to a Spanish-speaking county to perfect your linguistic skills. Also there are an abundance of ESL schools in these countries because English is the de facto business language. When you return, you will have both the education and experience to be a viable Spanish language teacher candidate.

Look, there are worst things in life to really worry about. I have a BS in sports medicine and a minor in Philosophy. When i graduated i got into real estate. My dad did not understand the reason why i never got into my field. College was one of the most important obstacles in my life that i overcame (dropped out once). Don't feel guilty for this. Life is self teaching. Maybe this will help you decide what it really is you want to do with the rest of your life. Peace!

Typically you get a masters degree because you need it in the field you will be working, otherwise why would you get it? You can study on your own for your own enlightment for free. Maybe you should figure out what you want to do first, and what degree you need to get you there instead of vice versa. You seem to be confused of the point of getting a degree. I can study anything I want without going to school for it. I also enjoy the benefits of my masters degree that focuses in the field I work.
