Actually no, it doesn't sound right. In Canada, things are MORE expensive than they are here in the U.S. So, a canadian quarter is actually worth MORE than a U.S. quarter. If you ever notice on magazines and such, it will list the U.S price of say $2.95 and then the Canada price is usually about a dollar more than that. So, Canadian money is worth more than U.S. money. So, a quarter in Canadian money may only equal out to about a dime in U.S. money. So, even though I don't know the exact currency exchange rate, it sounds reasonable, since the Canadian quarter is useless pretty much. But what she should have done is just not accepted it and told you to give her the dime instead. What she did basically is profited by the equivalent of a Canadian dime or so. So, technically..she did you a favor by taking the Canadian money off your hands, but, it sounds like she did rip you off a little.

No, its a minor thing to take a canadian quarter. You can bet she will give it to someone else at full US value not the 35 cents she charged you. I would report her to the parent company that owns that hotel chain. If she wants to make a big deal out of something minor, than you really have an obligation to make a big deal out of something major, like theft.

no, it's 14 cents for every dollar so, for a quarter it would be about 3 1/2 cents.
You got ripped off

additional details:
I color outside the lines...Canadian money is actually worth less then American money even though things are more expensive here.

No I never heard of them wanting more money for the quarter. I spend then now and then where I live and never had someone tell me that.

I don't know what the exchange rate is but that does not sound right. Most cashiers wouldn't have looked that close anyway.

Next time buy chips and soda from another store before you come to work, and bring it with you to work with you.
Let her see you with it and understand that you are not in any way obliged to buy from her.
