Because during spring training they set up their rotation so that Wang would pitch opening day, but now he's hurt. Mussina can't do it unless it's on short rest, which isn't worth it. I know it's Opening Day, but it's one game of 162. Pavano was the only person they could put in that spot without jacking with everyone's normal rest patterns.

Mussina is lined up to pitch the second game of the season, basically 5 days after his last spring training appearance, they don't want to pitch him on short rest and risk something happening to him. I do believe the Yankees got been pretty soundly opening day last season and still managed to win the AL East so I'm sure they'll be fine with Pavano starting, if he doesn't manage to get injured before then.

Hes OLD....Theyre trying not to rely on Mussina too much , Kei Iwaga is too young, but Carl has been waiting a year and a half to pitch, the Yankees orginazation wants to show the fans he still has it, besides theyre losing paitence with him and wants to see how he pitches with the pressure.......Mussina signed just for the money, and too be on a winning team that almost guarentees a playoffs. The Yankees really dont want a 40 year old pitching on the biggest day of the baseball season. Its too much for mussina. Besides, Carl is probaly one of the best guys on the roster, he pitched a All Star Game, I think hes in good shape to pitch if he has the right amount of rest. Besides, what can go wrong, theyre vrsing th worst team in baseball, The Devil Rays, I think Having Carl start when hes vrsing the easiest team in baseball is a way for him to start pitching ...I mean come on, how bad can the Devil Rays be?
Good Luck Carl!

Torre does not want to screw up his rotation, and he wants Mussina in the second slot. It really does not matter because with all the pitching problems the Yankees have Mussina's pitching the opening game will not make a difference.

Wow, Yankee fans r going nuts. A couple reasons why this move isn't horrible.
1). They play the Devil Rays
2). The Yankees want to test as soon as they can 2 see if he can still pitch, so if he can't they can do something about it.
3). He isn't horrible. I don't think opening day quality, but niether is Tom Glavine.

very final conventional seasom interest at YANKEE stadium then you definately can say "I went to the final conventional season interest the Yankees performed in the previous they circulate to the hot stadium" and if the Yankees do no longer make the playoffs (enable's wish that would not take place!) " I went to the final interest of the previous Yankee stadium" OR~ The excursion I went to, it particularly is exceedingly relaxing, yet they do no longer provide help to circulate into the locker by using fact the are frightened of terrorism, yet you are able to circulate into the click field, Dugout, outfield, and Monument Park and there isn't any longer something like a pink Sox-Yankee interest, yet while the Yankees lose that interest then you definately won't in any respect hear the tip of it, those Boston morons, will cheer "yankees suck!" until everbody leaves and it particularly is easily infuriating to take a seat down close to those bAstonians. yet while evidently like a lock the Yankees are going to win then Take that interest yet while evidently like a blowout then do no longer circulate. the purely suitable conventional season interest in spite of the incontrovertible fact that in the event that they locked for the playoffs then you definately won't see the suitable gamers play. i might take the pink sox interest + excursion to procure fortunate this year sAx circulate yankees, You sAck bAston pink sAx
