Scottsdale/Paradise Valley - Very nice areas, low crime, great schools, extremely expensive
North Central Phoenix - great schools (Madison school district), fairly low crime, very nice area
Tempe - Nice area, crime can be a problem in some parts, mostly college crowd
Gilbert/Chandler - nice part of town, low crime, good schools, still affordable
Ahwatukee - good schools, low crime, very nice area, on the expensive side
Stay away from south and west phoenix and you should be ok

Most areas in the valley have good and bad locations. Crime is high in all valley cities, but a little less so to the east. Things are growing very fast here. I have heard that Gilbert is very family oriented. Also Arizona ranks number one in the nation for identity theft and I just heard recently (yesterday on the news) that Arizona ranks third in the nation for crime and being a current resident this does not surprise me. Be warned traffic can be very rough so keep this in mind when thinking of a place to live. An hours drive can turn into a long commute depending on traffic and what time you need to be at work. You can check with the chamber of commerce for the cities that you are interested in and also check with local police departments for crime statistics. There is always something going on crime wise every day. There are many good things here as well and there is always something to do, its just you take the good with the bad and decide what is right for you and you family. Best of Luck.

E very city in the metro area has it's good/bad, nice/not so nice. I would say stick w/ the east valley, such as Scottsdale, Gilbert, Tempe, Chandler. Mesa has some nice areas, but for the most part, it's old & not so nice (not bad, just not nice). Chandler is old, too, but very little of it is. Tempe is old, but it's a college town, so not bad. Gilbert is the most new of cities (it was a town not too many years ago). I'd say Gilbert is probably your best bet - it's growing rapidly & has many conveniences although it's newer. I finished HS & bought a home there (still have it - in fact, it's for sale if you're intersted - this is not why I'm suggesting Gilbert however). I really like the area. I moved back to Vegas, where I'm much happier but ... anyway ... so that's just my opinion on the metro area.
Here's the link to the house I'm selling, just in case.

We moved from Brighton to Phoenix over 10 years ago. At that time, we picked the most northern subdivision that was close to schools, called Scarlett Canyon. It is near the high school, middle school, and grammar school. It is a nice subdivision and the area around it is also nice. It is near a big shopping mall, just off the freeway. It is a still close enough to everything and yet, also gives you some views of the hills and during hot air balloon season, if you get a house with your backyard facing north, you can watch the balloon rise into the air nearby. I do suggest to make sure your house faces north or south, not east or west, because of the heat factor.
We all loved it there, hope you will too!

Depends where in Phoenix the job is. You can live in Marana, AZ (just North of Tucson) and be in Phoenix within an hour. We live there and we can get from our house to the Phoenix airport in an hour.
I would never live in Phoenix. There are the nicer areas, but they come with a price tag also. If you like small town, Casa Grande is about 30-45 minutes away.
Looking at a map, starting at Tucson and ending in Phoenix, these are the towns.
Tucson, Marana, Casa Grande, and then Chandler which is right outside of Phoenix.

Purdy much anywhere on the east side of the metro area stay away from mesa though). Chandler/Gilbert is a hotspot and is very family oriented area. If the area is too expensive, Maricopa is another area that many are flocking to where housing is more affordable.

I personally don't like the east side. I recommend the west side, like Glendale or Peoria. If you have kids, try to get them in the Peoria School District or Deer Valley School District.
I did a ton of research on where I want my son to go when he's old enough when it was time to buy our house.
BTW, where in MI are you moving from? As a child I spent a few years in Monroe
