The younger kids are so sweet and fun to teach, but the older kids have more patience, although they can have attitudes. With the older kids I would only have to prepare 1 lesson plan 6 times. What do you teachers think?

I wanted to teach older children because I preferred to teach those subjects and have a bit more stimulating conversation than I would have with very young children. Perhaps you should also focus on the subjects you are required to teach. Which would you prefer and which do you think you would enjoy teaching more? I think teaching ANYONE, no matter their age, is a great asset to one's life! Good luck!

Ok I have taught nine years in a large system in Baltimore. This is my humble take. The little ones are so cute and so much fun to be with but the workload requires a lot more for the young ones. You will start school later, and get home later. As far as planning goes you will have a lot more cut outs and things to "make" this is all very time consuming. Now in return for this work you will have students that you absolutely love and that love you and school. On the flip side the bigger ones middle/high you will have students that you can talk to and hold more mature conversations with. They will be more flip at times and most of them will like you. They will not like school as much as the youngins. As for planning in the first two years no matter where you work you are going to plan a lot and have no life but with the older ones you wont have to do as many cut outs and little projects for your lessons. You will start earlier and end earlier with the older ones. I hope this helps you. Me personally I teach High School and have for nine years I love it now but I would do the little ones in a heart beat. Ask yourself this in your heart what would you rather do? It really comes down to that because the trade offs even out in the long run. If you ever have any questions about teaching my yahoo is gskotarides you can email me or messenger me.

Wow, big difference. I'm not a teacher, but if I were you, I would think really hard on my past experiences with both age groups, and try to decide which one I felt like I related to better.

I know for me it would be the older kids, because I don't have a lot of patience with someone I can't rationalize with on some level, and because I still feel like I'm a teenager myself -I still have one at home so I'm current on all the info they think is important, lol.

But maybe you are not like that, and feel like you could give more to the younger children. Think about it in those terms, and I think you'll come to the right decision.

I've done both, loved both, for just the reason's you've stated. I'm now in 5th grade...they are still sweet (for the most part) but more mature and I like to teach that level of content. I also taught middle school and liked only having to prepare for 1 subject...but don't be fooled, it's not just 1 lesson usually. You'll have higher classes and lower classes that you'll need to prepare for.

When you interview, look at all the features of each school, the community, etc.

Good luck.

Personally, I think 2nd grade would be a lot less stress (I teach third)... the behavior problems can stress you out quickly). Really, though, you need to think about your student teaching experiences and other teaching experiences and figure out which is better for you.

Of course, you have to try to do well at both interviews so that you really do have a choice. :)

Best of luck to you.

I used to teach, and I enjoyed the younger children so much more. They have less attitude and they are so open minded it's refreshing. However on the other hand, you have to have A LOT of patience because they are very energetic.

I am not a teacher but I would opt for the 2nd graders, they will provide you with many a laugh....the 7th graders are getting mouthy and are too busy wanting to show off in class. Problematic. Good luck in your interview!
