The character playing Paul, the father, was killed off in a car accident. What happened to the real actor?
It was a completely unexpected twist to the series.

I've only just started watching this on ABC1, so appreciate that I'm a bit late but it was so sad. He was good.
They handled the funeral episodes very well, for a comedy. It's still a funny series and has me laughing out loud.

John Ritter died of an aortic dissection caused by a previously undiagnosed congenital heart defect in 2003.
He became ill on the set and was rushed to the hospital. There was a lawsuit by his family for the treatment/ or lack of that he recieved. I believe it settled out of court.
He died on his daughters fifth birthday, the day before his wifes 41st birthday and six days before their wedding anniversary.
Pretty sad...funny guy....so young.

Just as all the answers posted above mine. John Ritter died in real life of a heart attack. He died on his real life daughter birthday.....RIP John, another great comedian fallen.

He died in real life, so they had to write it into the show.
