The motive behind the lie was to capture the attention of the police officer, also, I believed her own contemplations of suicide may have influenced her story. She was such a pretty girl, but as in most cases, people who are disabled in any sort of way are seen as deviants, oddballs, outcasts. So she felt isolated by society, and her father especially, seeing that he wasnt there for her emotionally.

Sorry, I had to read the answers because this confused me a lot.

I was suspecting that she and her father had a "relationship" with each other. But, afte reading the answers, it had cleared up a lot of the mystery for me.

I guess the point really was for attention because she had a disability and had lost her mother and since her father found her on the balcony where she told the detective her mother had jumped from (this was a lie), that she was herself intending to jump. I don't know what she lied about how her mother died. I just don't know why she was naked. Strange story.

I enjoyed the movie, but my favorite story was about the Mexican housekeeper who was treated unfairly.

Interesting question. I think she's just lonely (despite her father's love to her). Hence she tried all ways to attract attention (including flashing in the pub). And for the lies she told to the police, she wants the police to have more feeling for her ... be it only through empathy or curiosity.

When life gets a bit boring, sometimes, humans tend to create "mini" dramas in their own lives by creating stories.

She was having trouble dealing with the loss. She was trying to numb herself of that painful loss by outrageous behavior (IE. flashing the boys and tying to seduce the cop). By not telling the truth it made the loss less real and less painful. She also blames herself for her mother's death. She incorrectly believes if she was not deaf her mother would not have a reason to kill herself.

For a character who did not speak she had a lot to say. And it takes a very talented actress to be able to communicate all that without words.

She lied about it because that is how she was going to kill herself. The not that she gave the police officer was a suicide note.

That whole part confused me to! And i want to know what her note to the detective said!.... But i think she was trying to get him to feel sorry for her by saying she saw it happen so he would get it on with her!
