My family has a history of Endometriosis. I am in college & am taking a water aerobics class. My teacher, a female, always gives me a hard time when I have my period. Because I can't wear tampons & I have a very heavy flow. She has told me and many other girls in the class to just get in the pool with out any protection. Is it ok to not wear a tampon in the pool? Is it good to wear a tampon when you have a family history of endometriosis? What can I tell my teacher and/or dean?

Yes it's fine, I tend to agree with your teacher, you are being far too finicky about it. If you're not having any problems with endo, just a family history, then why worry about it. To me it just sounds like you are afraid to use tampons.

I remember my health teacher telling us that when you are in the water, your body stops your period temporarily from coming out. I dont know if I believe that... but Its what I was told then too. I think its just the teachers way of getting you into the pool. As for the endo, its ok to wear tampons even if you have endo, or are worried about getting it. Its just cotton. Just dont leave them in longer than 8 hours. Good luck

Why do people advise you to get into the pool when menstruating with or without protection I just don't get it. What about other people in the pool? If you know someone is menstruating in the pool you're in, would you still swim in it? Would you go in the next day? Would you ever get in unless the pool gets clean? I guess I'd better stay from public pool because of such people.

You cannot get into a public pool when you have your period unless you are wearing a tampon. You pose a serious health risk to all and the Health Dept will close down that pool.
