When you lie you can always tell a person what they want to hear. Not telling the truth is easy to do and can get a person a great many things. We only tell the truth if it's going to benefit us. Which is rare.

Because too many of us in this life are too interested in instant gratification. Therefore the upside of telling a lie (which is immediate) seems to payoff more than the upside of telling the truth (which is more long term). Long term, telling the truth is healthier.
