Actually the higher number is usually better, but you have to understand what ram does and how it interacts with your other components. More ram allows you to open large programs quickly and run programs faster.... if they require a lot of ram, which most do.

However, the speed of the ram is important too. RAM has on operating speed on it too. Some you want to make sure that you have the highest mhz operating ram speed that matches your motherboards front sid bus. You can normally find out how fast your fsb is by right clicking on my computer and hit the properties option. At the bottom it will tell you how fast your fsb is and then make sure you get ram that is that same mhz.

If you have an fsb that is 466mhz (which is pretty good) but have 1gb of ram that is 233mhz then your computer will not open operate as fast as it would with 256mb of 466mhz ram. This information should be listed on the ram or the listing you are purchasing from.

256 is technically better in any case. But it would be helpful to know what you want to do, to make a recommendation for which would be the better choice for you.

For example, if you want recommendations for a video card for a machine where you plan to do some INTENSE gaming, I'd recommend one with 256 MB RAM, or even 512.

If you're not into gaming, I'd recommend that you save some money and just get a video card with 128 MB, because in that case 256 would be overkill. If you're not going to need that much video mojo, you might as well save some bucks and get a card with 128 instead.

256 is better in this example, but anything less than 1 gig today is a waste of money.
