We used an old set of bed springs, attached with a cable to a winch and also attached to the boat. We dropped the springs about 20-30 feet from the dock, winched the springs in over the area we wanted dredged, then pulled the springs back out with the boat, then repeated the procedure until we go below what we needed for clearance. Ended up as sort of a fun project and we used the tillings that were brought inland to backfill a retaining wall.

Do you have the dredging equipment necessary? To do it write without considerable labor it is best to hire someone with the right equipment. If you can rent the equipment necessary I'd say go for it. but the longest reach i've seen of any rentable backhoes is about 20' I'd think you want to have someone with a pontoon dredge to come in and do it right.

Depending on your location, it would be wise to first check with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to see if you need a permit first. The fines are rather stiff if you do it without a permit and one is needed.
