I bought this used. The motor cranked and ran, rough. While adjusting the idle, it died and would not crank at original settings. While turning the engine it pops through the carb and studders while turning ( hesitates ). 1983 Chris Craft, 3.0 liter Chevy 4 cylinder.

Could have jumped time? It has a chain set.

The 3.0 is sometimes hard to diagnose when it comes to little issues like these. First, make sure that your plug wires are all in the right spots on the distributor. The firing order for that motor is 1, 3, 4, 2. If those are correct, install some wires, plugs, cap, rotor and points. If it is as simple as I'm thinking, these should take care of it.
