Have you ever tried to make sense of the English language, speaking it is bad enough.
Phonetic spelling was just an educational fad. Schools are now teaching the kids to spell properly, which is hard enough without spelling for texts

Because English is a very fu*&^d up and confusing language. Most of our words were taken from other languages, hence all the really screwed up spelling and grammar rules with thousands of exceptions.

Some mean little man sitting in a dark room came up with it to catch poor little children out on their spelling tests.

It's consistent with "Pharmacy", which is farmacia in italian, but pharmacie in french. Phonetic is fonetica in italian, and phonetique in french. So we're nearer the french.

The same reason there are 3 spellings of two....(to/too/two...)....the English language is full of contradictions and confusion. :)
