He meant that a grown woman shouldn't need her parents' approval. He was telling her to grow up.

Answer: The woman being written about did not have her parent 'approval,' (you can look up the word in a dictionary - or research it here), and that her sister was the one who had it from them.

The presumption is that the sister could seemingly do no wrong in the eyes of the parents and was Number 1 with them. Whereas the other sister came way down low in their eyes.

So the therapist seems to be (from what you have written) was saying, 'You're never going to get the approval you want from them, so get on with living your life (and I assume, that the idea was that she would find approval in other relationships ~ love, employment, friendships).

However, not having read whatever you read, this is only my guesswork.

It means that sometimes, however hard to try, you won't be able to get your parents to approve of what you do / are, so you have to live without it. This isn't necessarily your fault, sometimes parents play favourites, and you can go through your life thinking that there's something wrong with you, because they love your sister more, but really you're a perfectly good person, and it's them that have the problem.

I agree with the Goddess... what adult still requires parental approval when making life decisions? Perhaps she felt that her sister always had their approval when she felt that she was treated second-best.

He meant she should live her life without trying to constantly get her parents to 'like' what she does. She should do things for herself.

Stop basing your life around getting your parents to notice you. DO want YOU want, without CARING what they think.
