Effacement is the shortening, or thinning, of the cervix before or during early labor. Prior to effacement, the cervix is like a long bottleneck, usually about four centimeters in length. Throughout pregnancy, the cervix is tightly closed and protected by a plug of mucus. When the cervix effaces, the mucus plug is loosened and passes out of the vagina. The mucus may be tinged with blood and the passage of the mucus plug is called bloody show (or simply "show").

As effacement takes place, the cervix then shortens, or effaces, pulling up into the uterus and becoming part of the lower uterine wall. Effacement may be measured in percentages, from zero percent (not effaced at all) to 100 percent, which indicates a paper-thin cervix. Effacement is followed by cervical dilation.

A thinning cervix (effacement) indicates that the lower uterine segment is preparing for birth. It stretches out and facilitates the dilatation process.

Cervical effacement, although it is a very subjective assessment, can be determined by your provider during an internal examination. It is usually measured in percentages or fractions, such as 25 percent, 50 percent, 75 percent or completely effaced (tissue paper thin) at 100 percent.

Because a thin cervix dilates easier, it is best to enter labor with effacement already completed or nearly so. Primigravidas (first time mothers) usually start this process during the last month. The practice contractions she has been experiencing do this. Much of early labor is spent effacing before the active dilatation of the cervix begins in earnest

Effacement is the shortening or thinning of the cervix - dilation is the opening of the cervix.

The cervix is normally about 4cm long - prior to birth, it begins effacement - shortening, pulling up into the uterus - to facilitate the passage of the baby. Dilation is how far the cervix is opened.

you can be 50% effaced for awhile. I was 1 cm and 50% at 34 weeks and i was like that till like 37 weeks when i went into labor.I would start getting ready tho.You don't want to hurry when the labor starts.

Dilated is your cervix opening. Effaced is how thin it is getting. Sorry first answerer you are wrong. Good luck

It means that your cervix is starting to thin, preparing to allow the baby to pass through. I was 1cm and 50% for like three weeks before I actually went into labor.

It looks like everyone else has been able to answer the question for you, but I just wanted to say: Don't be afraid to ask questions when it comes to dealing with your body and your health. I am a nurse and nurses are a great resource for answering all kinds of questions that doctors may not take the time to answer.

you can stay that way for several weeks effacing is the thinning of the cervix.

it means that your cervix is turning down to the birth position. With it being 50% that's good, but you still might have a while to go, you never know you could go into labor tomorrow or go full term it just depends on your body, good luck
