I mean, why do we have to have a special crime called "hate" crimes? If you kill somebody, you obviously hated them, right? If you beat somebody to a pulp, you obviously hated them, right? I don't get it.

No, not all crimes are hate crimes. Many serial killers don't feel hate for their victims, though some do. For most it's a crime of 'power' not 'hate'. 'Hate' crimes are those committed for reasons very emotional & personal to the perpetrator. They often project their own feelings about an issue upon someone else.

I'm not explaining this very well, but I hope you are able to understand at least a bit of what I said. Thanks for asking.

Not at all. By definition a crime is an unlawful act, so this would include crimes such as shoplifting, drink-driving, under-age drinking and media piracy.

hate crimes are called hate crimes generally when they are racist. crimes such as killing someone for taking your parking spot is also kindof a hate crime too but not considered to be a hate crime
