rock stuff - MOGWAI !!!!!! (how could no one here mention mogwai?....i really wonder about this place sometimes.) tortoise...man or astroman....so many at that time.
funky stuff - medeski, martin, and wood; herbie hancock - headhunters/thrust
jazz stuff - man....i'm not even....
classical music - same thing.....
classical musician playing GREAT rock songs - christopher o'riley plays radiohead. (un-f@ckin-believable record(s) )

there are a few that i know of.
explosions in the sky is the best one that i know of.
and for better results try asking for 'instrumental' bands:)
for anythign else i would say just look on purevolume.com
they have rankings for all genres.
look the rankings for instrumental bands and the top few are your best bets:)

Fourtet, Tortoise, Thievery Corp. Those are all really good "instrumental" groups. Enjoy.
