I plugged in my external hard drive last night, my computer assigned a drive letter, I was able to move data around and everything worked perfect. I turned my computer off before I went to bed, woke up, turned it back on and realized I had left the HD on. Windows wouldn't boot, because I had something in the USB (does the same thing when my IPod is plugged in). So I turn the power off to my external, hit reset on the computer, and waited for Windows to boot completely. I turned the power to the external on, and now Windows won't recognize it. Any ideas?

Check the Drivers for USB, and the USB Root
See if any USB related Devices in the Device Manager have a Yellow Mark against them, which means a Problem.
If they do then fix them, they usually say what to do, usually, delete or do a Manual restore.
If the Usb Drive is still not recognised.
Try seeing if it can be recognised on another PC. If it works on another PC, this will rule out a Problem with the drive Itself.
So, as long as it is verified as okay, then Try and Install the Hardware by getting the Hardware to be recognised "forcefully", by a "ADD HARDWARE" action under Control Panel

Hi mandlefritz,

Unplug the external drive, reboot Windows. When it is finished booting plug in and turn on the external drive.

If that doesn't do it swap the USB cord to a different jack in your computer and try again.

Unplug the external drive from the USB port and when you have Windows running, replug into the USB port and Windows should pick it up.
