Your percieved performance would be identical. Either a USB connection or the internal is several thousand times faster than the phone line communication speed.
you won't notice a thing.

Yes, a USB connection is much faster than a dialup Internet connection.
I don't know the speed of the fastest dialup connections these days (haven't used one in years), but even the slowest USB connection is probably somewhere between 100 and 200 times faster than your dialup connection.
If you're using a USB 2.0 modem (which you probably are), it's probably about 40,000 times faster than your dialup.

If it was any faster, you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. 56k is slow no matter how you hook it up! Go DSL or Cable, there are special deals out there and the speed difference is well worth the few extra bucks.
