The result of the Battle of Gettysburg was, in fact, ensured victory for the Union (the North). The Battle of Gettysburg destroyed the Army of Northern Virginia which was the greatest challenge to the Union Army. The final engagement (Pickett's Charge) alone resulted in the destruction of nearly one corps of Confederate troops under the command of James Longstreet. The battle also ruined some of the finest Confederate officers, like George Pickett, who was throw into depressesion after the loss of his division in the charge the bears his name, and John Bell Hood, who lost the use of his arm in the battle, and also much of his sense. Hood later went on to command the Army of Tennessee, but his over-aggressive fighting style lead to it's destruction by the forces of William Sherman in his march to the sea. The Battle of Gettysburg was demoralizing to the Southern people, it weakened thier resolve to continue the war, and destoryed thier last hope of victory.

It was the turning point of the Civil War. The Union troops won a battle they really shouldn't have won and demoralized the Confederate troops. If the Union troops would have re-grouped quickly and pursued the Confederates, the Civil War may have ended much earlier than it did. But Gettysburg was like D-Day in World War II -- the tide shifted and the winners progressively moved on to victory.

The irreversible road to defeat for the South. The battle was won by the North and it signified, for all intents and purposes, as the battle that won the war.

The North won the battle, and it led to the North winning the war. It was sort of the last gasp of the Rebellion. When the South lost at Gettysburg it was one of the last offensive phases they would have.
