Amtrak would be the easiest and quickest way to LA by rail. There are stops in Downtown SD, Solana Beach,a nd Oceanside and numersous stops on Orange County and LA.

If you don't want to do Amtrak you can take the Coaster commuter train to Oceanside then take a Metrolink commuter train to LA.

go to Amtrak's website or go to SDCommute.com for info on the Coaster and Metrolink.

I had been in San Diego last year and went to Camarillo via Amtrak. You can ride in downtown San Diego and get the ticket ahead of time! It is spring break and people travel alot! You can get a ticket a day or 2 to be sure. Amtrak has many stops but it definitely arrives on time!
