There are big concrete tubes sticking out of the ground and there are men digging. What are they looking for?

If they are water and sewage pipes, where are they going. They're sticking upright in the middle of a field

It's a landslip site. It slipped about five years ago onto the motorway, and part of the carrriageway was coned off for ages whilst they re-stabilized it. They have been working on and off at this site ever since. The concrete tubes (like wells) are there, I think, so that they can access and monitor the groundwater levels and slippage of the earth. Perhaps they are also digging new groundwater monitoring boreholes.
