I mean, they shape your every day from the start. Completely control everything you do and participate in. Do they use put downs and ridiculing to keep you in a zombie like state?

Nope and if they tried the relationship would be over and quickly. When someones like that it gets worse day by day. Their start controling you, telling you what you can or cant do etc. If you allow this the beatings will start soon after.
