"Why did the flower fade?
I clutched it to my heart in excess of feeling and crushed it.
Why did the lamp go out?
I shielded it to my heart in my cloak and it got no air."

Is it from Gitanjali? or maybe The Gardener? I've got a bunch of his stuff... I'll keep looking.

It's from The Gardener. I only have an excerpt in Tagore: An Anthology, edited by Krishna Dutta and Andrew Robinson. You can find the full text (not sure of the translation quality) at the following links:

http://www.online-literature.com/tagore-rabindranath/2955/

or http://www.terebess.hu/english/tagore3.html

The passage you asked about is in verse 52... but you've got the two questions switched: "Why did the lamp go out?" comes first.

It's from "The Gardener," at the following website:

At that website, scroll down to Verse 52.
