Is it because we dont trust anyone we know or that everyone we know is pretty much ignorant and we would never ask them anything that mattered?

It ain't about trust, is about finding a different approach to the dilemma. Same reason we go to a psychiatrist, but without the fees.

Strangers are perhaps, less likely to be judgmental or look down on you if asking for advice on certain subjects. AND..if a stranger does judge, it doesn't hurt as much or at all. A stranger doesn't have a history with you so the advice may be more open and honest.

Plus, sometimes there is a fear that a friend may spill the beans to someone else (either on purpose or by accident), or that the advice you're asking for may make the friend uncomfortable and less likely to hang out with you.

It's not necessarily that the people you know are ignorant (they might be, I don't know), but more that you may be concerned about how these people view you based on the questions you seek answers to.

Some times it is difficult for people to be as honest as they should with those closest to them .
Asking a stranger would allow you to phrase the information in a manner in which they might agree with or support your opinion or view .
Those who know you will more then likely not swallow that line of bull . They know whats going on .

Truth be told if you want advice about something go to those it is going to affect and consult them first .

Give them first crack at answering or discussing it with you .

If you can not do that then you are a child afraid to grow up and deal with reality .

So put one word in front of the other and begin an honest conversation .

Strangers don't condemn you. Here you can be free to express what you feel w/o worry and gain insight from many different people of all ages and backgrounds. Strangers (at least people here) are generally very helpful and supportive b/c your're the person asking for help, their help in whatever problem or question you have.

Our friends are sometimes too close for an unbiased opinion. We don't want to put them in a position to know our innermost thoughts. The invention and easy access to the Internet with its provided anonymity allows us to ask and be answered by a very diversified group of people. You don't hurt anybodies feelings by a thanks but no thanks leave it attitude for the answer.

Many answer gives you many thoughts you may not have even thought about. Sometimes people are so distorted they cannot see things for themselves clearly. I do not think it ever hurts to get other peoples opinion you do not have to go with other peoples opinions.I think you have some others input!

Well, probably because we need another opinion outside from the ones we have from the people we know. Take care!★

Anonymity. It's like asking thousands of people on yahoo answers. More well-rounded answers?

Maybe it's to get an unbiased opinion. Think about it: Who would you consider more objective, someone who is close to you and may tell you what you want to hear, or someone who doesn't know you at all and would therefore call it as they see it?
