3.28.07: the traffic commissioner of new delhi (which has 14,000,000 people--yes, 14 MILLION), qamar ahmed, has issued the new smoke nazi law: if you are caught smoking a cigarette when you are driving your car, you shall be pulled over by the indian coppers who will issue you a ticket in the amount of $32.00!!! his reasoning is that 'the human brain cannot do two things at once.' well, what about multi tasking in america?
the streets of new delhi are already overcrowded with rickshaws, bicycles, cows, beggars, and overturned trucks. therefore, should our own traffic commissioners of our cities issue such ridiculous edicts (what accident was ever attributed to smoking a cigarette when you drive?), this is what we should do to protest it. (even non smokers should do it because they should protest ever increasing TAXATION): READ ON...

we will abide by the smoke nazis' laws by pulling our cars over to the side, wherever the "side" of the "road" may be, stop, put our hazard lights on, go to the back of our cars, place a sign on it which says, "i am having a legal smoke break," then puff away.
non smokers, who are sick to death of the government imposing anti-smoking laws while it is soooooo addicted to the tax money that tobacco products bring in (but who will not raise taxes on alcohol, even though so many horrible deaths and manglings are attributed to drunk drivers), can just chew on the stubs of those chewing gum cigars. this should be all-out protest.
then, since drivers on x-ways can't help but slow down to gape at any car pulled over in the ER lane, there will be massive traffic jams, and then the population will scream bloody murder against the smoke nazi politicians who think up this garbage when they should be making sensible laws, as well as voting in reductions of THEIR salaries/benefits.
good?

ADDED AFTER READING AN ANSWER: well, if a smoker in new delhi burned his balls, then it might lead to a population reduction in india. maybe that's what was truly on the smoke nazi's mind. but i do not think so: $32 in india is a LOT of money!
AND: tobacco farmers are legitimate businesspeople. they pay taxes. why should they grow cotton, corn, or especially soybeans (already, soybean food is being shown as toxic to the human body) if using tobacco is legal as well as income producing to them? do we want to see a tobacco underground sales network run by the mob, like in prohibition days? yeah, great solution!
the things that will cause accidents w/this foolishness are: (1) non smokers, dramatically holding up their hands over their faces due to the FATEFUL receiving of a whiff of secondhand smoke (NEVER proved as causing diseases!); & (2) road rage over the traffic jams caused gapers that slow down to watch law-abiding citizens take their smoke breaks, legally!

IT WAS THE GOVERNMENT'S STUDY that shows that talking on a cell phone IS NOT a cause of accidents!
cigarettes and lighters are normally within open reach of the smoker in a car, and are not tucked way down into a purse or glove compartment because smokers are too addicted to nicotine (ask any doctor if nicotine is more addictive than heroin or ANY OTHER KNOWN ADDICTIVE SUBSTANCE and she will say yes, it is) to hide their smokes from themselves. so, they do not lose concentration searching for their addiction.
just like the grant-paid "global warming crisis" pseudo-scientists claim that GW is the result of OUR pollution, any scientific paper that says that health problems are the result of secondhand smoke is a LIE--NO truthful, proven scientific evidence shows that cigarette smoke makes you ill.
however, children born before 1990 never had such a high incidence of asthma. that is from POLLUTION, not gore's claim that smoking causes global warming! it is YOUR overindulgence in

your own use of items that contribute to the pollution of the earth and air that make the children sick, that make YOU sick. if you cough when you are close to someone that smokes, politely ask him to move without acting snobbish, else, he may take a puff and blow it into your face, deliberately, for your rude, i-am-righteous attitude. is it too hard for you to be polite? MUST you carry on with your recently LEARNED hystrionic smoke nazi behavior??? how dramatic! get an oscar!
yes, it IS true that putting on makeup while driving is a hazard because the eyes are not staying on the road ahead or checking the mirrors.
i have driven for 38 years. i have smoked in my car, driving, for about 25 of them (except when my passenger doesn't smoke--consideration, of course, is afforded). the ONLY two accidents that i had were when i just started to drive, and i was not smoking THEN. nor were cell phones even invented!
i see an awful lot of hypocrisy in our society, and much SELF interest.

I read the entire question, including additions, which I always wait for, prior to answering. I also read most of the answers before I answered it.
Even though I do not smoke, this question makes a lot of sense. There is way too much government intervention of EVERYTHING we do! Now that it has been discovered that no two irises in the eyes are exactly alike, maybe the politicians will decide to vote yet another tax into law to pay for cameras installed everywhere to catch these BAD PEOPLE--who pay for cigarettes, and who pay the highest sin taxes for their right to do so, in order that they can get more money out of them by issuing them traffic violation tickets! Can you imagine how many more people will cram into the already overworked judge's court rooms, now, to protest these tickets, because it is their RIGHT to smoke?
I read in the newspaper a couple of weeks ago that two murderers in prison took a guard hostage because all they wanted were some cigarettes. It's pretty silly to make prisons non-smoking buildings only because they are owned by some city that has no-smoking laws on public grounds. If it will lead to violence, let them smoke.
Although soldiers in training are not allowed to smoke on government property, once they go into service, they can smoke virtually anywhere they want to. Will you neglect and ignore them when they come home because they smoke???
But, some of you that answered already seem so angry that YOU may in turn go crazy from your anger at smokers. If you do, and you assault one, you will be put into jail, where you will smell cigarette smoke because it's stupid to have prison unrest because prisoners are being forced not to have cigarettes.
Yes, I think Louiegirl_Chicago is right: this is an issue that too much time is being wasted on. Rather, we should spend some time writing letters to our congresspeople urging peace talks in the Middle East so that we are not attacked again by fundamentalist Islamics, by suicide bombers.
I also think that too many non-smokers spend too much time pointing fingers of blame on others, not only about smoking, but about all their misery and suffering. I think that you should look deeply into yourself to determine what role you yourself play in any situation that makes you unhappy. If part of it is your own fault, put the blame onto yourself and take responsibility for it.
If you make a smoker angry because you will not ask him politely to move away from you, then blame yourself for his blowing smoke into your face, making you choke.
Anyways, I am getting increasingly annoyed at more and more governmental intervention and control, as well as taxes, taxes, and more taxes. It is like what happens in the movie called Minority Report with Tom Cruise--the government "prethinks" crime, and businesses know you and what you will buy from them by having tracked you already by your eyes.

"his reasoning is that 'the human brain cannot do two things at once.' well, what about multi tasking in america?"
Oh you mean driving and putting on your makeup or reading a newspaper???
They've already done a study proving that drivers talking on cell phones are more dangerous because they are unable to concentrate on driving even tho they are only yapping their mouths... They've even determined that someone who is thinking too much while driving is unable to concentrate on the road as much...
The traffic commissioners argument is a pretty good one. and its true not everyone is smart enough to do two things at once... they might get by without getting anyone physically hurt because of this at the office and home... but when a car is involved... PEOPLE DIE!
In fact I've seen so man y stupid drivers nearly killing each other because the driver of at least one vehicle was too busy doing something else... that I really don't care if they make so you won't be riffling through your purse looking for a smoke and searching for your lighter or reaching for your cars lighter... more power to them.
Its less an attack on smoking and more a reflection of the actions of stupid people who can't control their vehicles.

Since tobacco smoking in all of its' forms causes ill health and is a major contributor to the health care crisis in the US and abroad it should be banned entirely from the planet. Let the farmers grow cotton and soybeans or corn instead.

I disagree that our laws regarding smoking are Nazi laws. I want the anti-smoking laws! I am sick of smokers inflicting their pollution on me.
I can't avoid them all the time. I literally can't breathe around their filth - I cough violently and can't catch my breath. Smoking laws protect people!
