No offense, but NEVER smooth sailing? That can only be exaggeration. I'll grant you that most of our lives have rough spots, but if you honestly think there are no smooth patches either, then that shows that the real problem is not life, but YOU.
Think about it. If a person said "How come it's always dark all the time?" you could only conclude that either they were blind or locked in a closet or something. If you are unable to even see or remember the smooth patches when they occur, then that is quite obviously your first and biggest problem.
So take a step back. REALLY look at things. If you like things to be easy going, then try and figure out what made things easier for you and try and re-create those situations. If you can't figure it out, enlist friends to help you. Some people here have already suggested some things that make their lives easier... that's what works for them. You need to find what works for you.
But first, you have to be able to see the difference!

Actually, life is smooth sailing. Everything that happens to us is a direct result of what God wants to happen. Rough times allow us to enjoy the good times. As lifting weights causes temporary discomfort that allows for long-term physical health, life's setbacks are the same way.
The future only a mystery to those who expect it to be some. Knowledge of God and self replace the mystery with a comfort of salvation.

If life was always smooth sailing we would never learn anything about life. We learn from the rought spots how to make things smooth. Also, if we knew what was in the future, it would take all the fun out of living. Nothing to look forward to learning.

Because sailing is a lot better when there's wind!0!
This wind might not seem good at times, mainly when it blows too hard, but at the same time, if you manage not to fall off the boat, you'll get there faster!0!
Yes, the future(there) is indeed a mystery, but not by force, it's just saved to surprise you. When you get there, you might regret not having stronger winds!0!
Good luck!

Life is a test. If it were too easy everyone would pass with flying colours. It's a challenge to stretch us, to make us grow. If it's effortless we won't appreciate it & we'll become lazy & complacent. Yes the future is a mystery. You can make plans & it's important to set goals but you always leave a little bit to chance. Life is a journey. Enjoy it for the duration, not just the destination. You never know what new adventures are around the bend...

Life is not--and will never be--smooth sailing. Without pain, we would not have compassion. Without death, we could never have life.
The future is the present, only longer. Who you are now determines who you will be, so carefully choose who you are.

If you had no expectations, could life ever be seen as bad? Life is not rough, it just does not always go how we want it to. If you did not want life to go a certain way it would always be good.

Burns said it best. "The best laid plans of mice and men go oft astray and leave us naught but grief and pain for promised joy."
