In other languages, it is called "Holy Friday". In Old English, I think it is "Maundy Friday", although I have no idea what "Maundy" means.
It is "good" because Jesus' death accomplished our redemption, fulfilled God's eternal plan. There is victory over all death in Jesus death.
Easter Sunday is what makes the Friday "good". Without Easter Sunday, the Friday would be "Black Friday".
(Note: the crucifixion was actually on Thursday, not Friday. It is believed to be Friday because the next day was a sabbath. However when we read about the Feast days in the Old Testament, we read that there were special Sabbaths, depending on when the Passover came, and the Passover depended on the moon, which does not follow 7-day weeks. So there must have been 2 Sabbaths in a row, explaining the "Three days and three nights".)

the observance of Good Friday on Friday night is austere, a time of reflection and intercession, as well as the adoration of Christ the Crucified, the sacrificial lamb. Holy Communion is not celebrated in some traditions because this is a time to reflect on Jesus’ absence since he was in the tomb. The service of Tenebrae is incorporated into the more traditional service of the Cross. The altar is still bare from Maundy Thursday. The Passion according to St. John is the main scripture reading. John speaks of Jesus’ death on the cross as his glory. A long “Bidding Prayer” is punctuated with silences to allow for individual petitions. A large wooden cross is carried in procession at the end of the service. These words are chanted by the bearer, “Behold the life-giving cross on which was hung the salvation of the whole world.” The congregation responds, “O come let us worship him.” The service ends on a note of triumph. There is no benediction since this is part two of a three part service.

The term good in this context doesn't mean good as in a nice thing, it is good as in a pure thing (good vs evil) and is a slight mistranslation from the latin of Holy, so it is Holy Friday, aka a Holiday (holy day). This is a Catholic tradition that states when Christ said "Father forgive them, they know not what they do" is the moment in which all sinners were forgiven their sins. Although I tend to disagree, because it was Christ's death and resurrection that gave him the power to forgive sins. No offense against catholics, but I disagree alot with their paganistic perversions of the holy traditions, I speak against the founders and those in high places, not the so called clergy. Notice, if Christ was killed on Friday, and the Bible says he was in the grave for 3 days and 3 nights, that would be in the grave on Friday (1), Saturday (2) and Sunday (3) and as we know form the Bible the disciples and the women were at the grave early the next morning, which would make it Monday, not Sunday. Ever notice how Easter falls on different days? Sometimes it even falls in march. The truth is that easter follows pagan rituals. It comes on the First Sunday after the First full moon after the Equinox. If you look in the book of Acts when Peter and james were captured, James was killed and the king was gonna kill Peter after he finished celebrating Easter. So if Easter represents Christ's death and rebirth, why then would the Chrisitan hating king celebrate it, then wrap up his celebration by killing another chrisitian? The truth is that Easter is a pagan holiday stemming form Queen Ishtar back in the days of Babylon, this tradition has been celebrated by pagans long before Christ was born or died on Earth.
Feel free to contact me for more information on the true origin of Easter and many other catholic holidays.

It is call Good Friday because Jesus died that day to take away our sins so that we could be saved and live with him forever in everlasting life. Some people don't celebrate Christmas. It depends on where their priorities are.
