You can adjust the air in it to how soft or hard you want it.

An air mattress. Sofa pull out beds make me feel like I've been sleeping on a bed of rocks (springs sticking into my side all night), and futons make me feel like I've been sleeping on concrete (too hard).

Temporarily? Air matress #1 (if it's a *good* one,) futon 2, sofa bed pull out #43 (they always kill my back, for some reason.)
Long term, futon becomes number one, because they're more durable. Also, certain.... ahh, activities on an air matress can be fun, but can be very bad for the air matress.

Air mattress. It can be filled or lowered to fit the firmness you want.

I think an air mattress is more comfortable...
if you're sleeping alone.
