Lots of things will do this.. your ipod is basically a portable hard drive with software embedded in it to let it play music .
A sudden jar , dropping it , changing songs too quickly will all contribute to it , however you don't have to let your battery run down ..
the following is borrowed from the apple site ..
iPod nano
Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
Press and hold the Menu and Centre (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
Tip: If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the centre.
If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adaptor and plug the power adaptor into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep. Its a good idea to always back up your music library just in case you have to do a re-set ..that way even though you loose your songs you will still be able to re-sync

You see an electronic is sort of like a human if you push it to the limit it will die out or something. you were probably just scrolling to fast and the computer system inside probably just couldnt handle that speed of rotation.

I use my Ipod every day with a FM trasmitter in my Semi. Every now and then it will lock up if I go over a sharp bmp in the road. Nothing to worry about, reset and go on

the iPod is a mini-computer.
Like all computers, it crashes (freezes) occasionally.
