We have 2 little boys and we still have payment on truck and trailer and we are already in financial trouble. How can I be excused from jury duty? I was not born in US so my English is not best so I may not very well understand some words.

It is a priviledge to be asked to serve on a jury, an American right. Though you are called, it does not mean you will actually serve on a jury. You sit in a room waiting, then go to the court room where the lawyers ask you questions and decide if they want you on the jury. Not everyone is picked for a jury.

Most states will only let you out of jury duty under certain conditions. But since you travel and your income is dependent totally on traveling as truck driver, you need to explain that to them.

The best thing to do would be to just explain the situation. I got a jury duty notice which would have been my due date with my third child. I told them I was pregnant and due on that day and the guy on the phone gave me an automatic excuse for 5 years. That was 13 years ago and I haven't been ever called back.

Now, my husband, who isn't even registered to vote, got called last year. I guess in Illinois, if you have a drivers license you can be called to jury duty now.

If you get the notice call the number on the back and explain your situation to see if you can get yourself out of it. Chances are you may be able to, especially if you are the sole provider and you have 2 kids. Whatever you do, do not ignore the notice or you can get fined for not showing up.

Explain the same thing you just told us to the courts. If they listen, great, if they don't, you're stuck.
