Can anyone tell me the differences between the Louvre museum in France and the Getty Museum in L.A.? I heard a lot of people liked the Getty, and I wonder if it reaches the same category as the Louvre.

I don't think the Getty begins to compare with the Louvre, as many of Getty's pieces are of doubtable heritage. Some are actually copies of original pieces and they don't want you to know that. Plus, the Louvre is run by the state instead of some rich man's estate and it is open to the public more than the Getty. I think the Getty has a shady reputation for a reason.

The Getty Museum and the Louvre have different collections, though both are known for Old Master paintings, sculpture and decorative arts, and antiquities.
I work at the Getty so I'll correct a misperception in the answer above. The pieces on display at the Getty Museum are originals, not replicas, with one exception: the bronze sculptures displayed outdoors at the Getty Villa in Malibu (one of the Museum's two locations). These are modern bronzes cast after ancient Roman sculptures, which are now in the Archaeological Museum in Naples. Original bronzes could not be kept outdoors. The Getty Museum is run by a charitable trust and not by the estate of J. Paul Getty. Admission to the Getty Museum is free, and each location is open 6 days a week.
