Many of the banks offer pre-paid debit cards where you can put any amount of money on it and use it like a debit card.

Also some of the check cashing places also offer them

Always travel with some cash. If you are worried about it getting stolen, here is a tip my Gramma gave me years ago. Safety pin the cash to the inside of your bra if a girl and the inside of your pocket if a boy.
If you get a visa checkcard it will be accepted only where visa is accepted (which is most places) But have at least $20 cash on you at all times for those little emergencies.

Have a great trip!

Go to the bank and ask them about a Visa checkcard that you have to prepay.
Or, travelers' checks.
Actually, I think AMEX is doing away with checks, and going toward checkcards.

you can buy pre-paid credit cards that you can put money on right at the grocery store or check cashing place. if you lose them they have a system for replacing them. you should probably get 2 and keep them in different places. just in case.
check cashing stores might be able to give you more one on one help to explain the process to you. have fun!
