At one time April 1 was New Years Day in many countries. Beginning in the 17th century, European nations began celebrating January 1 as New Years, people who clung to the older method were "April Fools", and it was the custom of people to do things to make them look even more ridiculous.

Its because when first of year changed to january first not everyone knew or recognized this change. Generally it was understood that the poor uneducated folks who still recognized thier year to begin with the spring (sort of a paganish habit) these people didnt really recognize the new year. So those folks who did recognize that the year began jan first (assumed to be the educated and modern thinking sort) began to call the others who celebrated the new year in april "April Fools".
