I guess it was successful the first time round and people liked it, obviously not to your taste though.
As for the person who said the leading man is dead, when did Gordon Kaye die? Assuming you are talking about Rene being the main character - or do you mean the character died in the show?

I didn't hear about that but if it is what a waste. It was good back in the eighties but I just can't stand it anymore. My mum used to look at the repeats on UKGold.
