Yes, it's a completely learned disease. They catch it usually from their parents, sometimes but not as often from clergy or even educators, but mainly from parents.

The problem then really is making sure those parents never expose themselves to children. They are a danger to minors and only want to use these innocent kids to further their agenda of hate, lies and procreation.
They even teach overt heterosexuality in SCHOOLS!
It's everywhere!
On the street, on the bus, on trains and airplanes. They even have invaded politics!

I think homophobia is a learned behavior. I don't think people are born to hate or be afraid of anyone. It's the way that they are raised and what ideas their family, friends, and other such people are putting in their heads. When growing up with parents who are homophobic, that person is more likely to be homophobic themselves. With the right education, I think that they will learn. Teach kids at an early age that hating someone for who they are is wrong.

It is a choice. I have many gay friends and when I first met my OH he wasn't exactly homophobic, not to me anyway, but rather - they should get a girl its perverted etc.. Now he has been educated and has gay friends and he is aware of the lifestyle and hardships and discrimination many suffer he even supports a gay man's right to adopt and my friend is going through the process. Education and understanding wins every time

people who are homophobic tend to choose to be homophobic because even though it's not supposed to be accepted and tolerated in society anyway, homophobia exists as a choice. gay people are often born gay, but bigots were not born to be bigots. bigotry develops through ignorance and lack of understanding of what homosexuality entails. bigotry is never a good thing. what is never a choice however is treating people with respect and courtesy regardless of one's sexual orientation. which as human beings we must do. as for being cured, educating themselves about homosexuality and realising that there are other aspects of homosexuality, besides the intercourse involved is very much important and one way of eradicating homophobia

Definitely a lifestyle choice that can be cured, as with any unhealthy and self-destructive lifestyle like alcoholism, drug abuse, or religious fanaticism, though some may have a genetic predisposition to it. Now, if only we can isolate the responsible genes we can nip this in the bud while the fetus is still in the womb...

i believe its a lifestyle choice. Also some influences are family, religion, and friends. Some people can be educated but others cant.

example:
Sometimes when its a parents child they cant accept and feel like they did something wrong but you cant change who someone is. Homosexuality happens when in the womb. So their should be no hatred toward someone because of this. but its just like racism.

It's taught behavior. If my daughter was a homophob it would be because of me. I think parents have to take more responsibility for how their kids act. Now if the parents are homophobs then hopefully they'll get to an age where they'll realize that their parents are full of crap

Lol I love the flip on the question.

People are not born with irrational, baseless hatred - they have to learn it. Some people learn hate from their families, others from their houses of worship.

This is different from sexual orientation, which we know to be inborn, unchanging over time, and not a "choice." Science backs this up as well.

I guess it all boils down once again to the science vs. generalization and fantasy debate, doesn't it?

They cannot be born that way. My Bible was written by my Gay Lord, and it says in one of the books there that these people CHOOSE to be like this. (Then again, sometimes it rants about boiled oats!) I have been trying to get them to the ex-homophobe program, where praying to the Queer Eye guys cause you to be enlightened, and free from those homophobic beliefs!!!! THEY CAN BE CURED, IF THEY ONLY PRAY!!!!!

It's definitely a lifestyle choice.

I think being homophobic comes from the enviornment that you were raised in. I have a few friends that are homophobic because their families are and have pressured them to feel the same.
