The first two answers will do the trick, but in turn it will also disable the active scanning functions that AVG has.
Doing that will reduce the effectivness of AVG.
Your best bet would be to open the AVG panel and go to "Schedules" or "Scheduled tasks". There will be an option for you to set the time when the scan runs. Uncheck the "everytime i boot" option and set it to a time that you like.

You installed the program to do a job, and it is. While it is scanning, you can continue to use your computer without any interference. What you may be looking at is the progress window. Just click on a blank part of the screen, and the window will disappear, but you will notice a tab on the bottom of the screen relating to your security program. This tab will stay there until the program has finished scanning, and you can view the progress at any time by clicking on it. The window will reappear again. After the program has finished scanning, the tab will disappear. You will be told of any threats found, and they will be put in the virus vault. You should clean this out at least once a week. Remember, as soon as you turn on your computer, the program is automatically receiving updates, and looking for threats. You should also get a registry cleaner, and don't forget to de frag. All these steps will keep you computer running safe, and fast.

Double click on the AVG icon in the System Tray to open the AVG Control Center. There, select Scheduler and then select 'Scheduled Tasks'. Select 'Test Plan in basic mode' and then click on 'Edit Schedule'.
