We've never had one in the family so we're not sure if there is something important that we shouldn't do. Or have to do. It was a gift from her grandma for her 6th birthday. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Obviously she knows to keep the aquarium closed and not stick her fingers in there.

well no worries she knows the bigest two rules dont open the lid and no fingers, but just make sure it gets fed and proper water, the tank cleaned and lighting you might want to yahoo search the lizard type. remember lizards can carry disease so keep the tank clean. find a vet to help make sure it stays healthy or to find out info on it. my brother had a lizard when he was 10 we were allowed to take it out and play with it a bit but only when we had adult supervision but it died 2 days later we were told to go pick out a branch for it and place it in the tank well apparently the one we picked had a little twig sticking out the lizard was very jumpy in the cage and well you can imagine what happend(lizard went bye bye) but about two years later we found one outside and kept it for like a month and then let it back out. good luck :)

The lizard needs to be at a certain temp and humidity leval depending on the type. also it needs to have a certain diet depending on the type. Make sure your neice washes her hands after she does anything with the lizard because she could get salmonella if she does not.

If you could tell us the TYPE of lizard that she has, we could send you a link or two on care sheets that provide the basic information such as the temperature required, humidity, diet, etc.

The best way to learn to care for reptiles is by going to your local library and doing some research, or stopping in at your local pet shop where they can give you advice and booklets on how to maintain the best care.

Reptiles make terrible pets. They can't realize affection as a dog might. At 6 years old, I think a puppy would be the perfect pet.
She could learn how animals show affection and love attention.
The only attention a reptile understands is when it's fed.
That's my observation.
