American Idol - Are the judges on drugs or just to scared to tell the truth?

One week the judges tell the contestants to pick a song and "make it theirs". The next week they bust them for changing up a song that "doesn't need/is to sacred" to be changed. Are they just too afraid of Clive or Simon Lithgoe to stay consistent or tell the truth?
