If a mass is pushed downwards on a body, it will exert same force from each part which is sinking. So, if x energy is used to force the unsharpened knife down the bread, The the whole area which is facing the bread will push it down. As the area is more than the sharpened knife, it results in a more wider and less deeper cut than the sharpened knife, In which the area facing the bread is lesser.

A sharp blade cuts through any medium with more ease than a dull one, meaning it takes more energy to propel a dull blade through something than it does to propel a sharp blade through the same thing. The sharper blade therefore takes less effort (and less time) to cut through anything.
