My fridge is about 4 years old and is a GE. I just noticed today that it is not keeping things very cold. It is keeping them cold enough that they are not spoiling but still it isn't very cold. I do have it turned up all the way to 9, and the freezer side seems to be doing just fine.
Help please!

Should the compressor be warm or cool to the touch? The useful answers I have gotten are very helpful.:)

I want to thank you all for your answers. They were very helpful. We ended up calling a repair man and it turned out it was the heating unit in the freezer. He replaced it and all is good and well :)

most likely the defrost timer is bad and needs to be replaced...this on the lower right hand side of the back of your refrigerator...could also be defrost heater or defrost termination switch...i would replace defrost timer first it is only about 25 dollars and you can do this yourself

Clean the coils. If they are underneath, remove the front vent panel vacuum and brush all the dust/hair and gunk off them. If they are on the back, pull the fridge away from the wall and do the same. Also check the freezer, there is a vent that lets the cold air into the fridge part. If you have food and stuff packed too tightly against it the cold doesn't get to the fridge.

Sorry I didn't see you said the freezer is fine. It is probably the latter then. You have blocked the vent from the freezer to the refrigerator. It is still a good idea to clean the coils, your fridge will operate more efficiently with clean coils.

Carefully, pull your refrigerator out from the wall & vacuum the coils, & all the nooks & crannies on the backside. If you haven't done this in a while, you'll be amazed at how much dust has accumulated. When the refrigerator is back in place, take the plastic cover off the bottom of it, where your drip pan is & vaccum & clean the pan & cover while you're at it. You should have the temp button turned to "5 or 6" not 9....If it still isn't keeping things as cold as it should, it may need a new compressor. Just a guess.
